Walt Quote Wednesday (November 30, 2022)

From the “A Visit to the Wonderful Disneyland" article by Elie Wiesel for the Jewish newspaper Forverts in 1957.

"Childhood. The goal of my work has always been to awaken a sense of youth in men, in adults. Because - the best part of a man's life is his childhood."

Leslie Iwerks Shares Inside Look at ‘The Imagineering Story’ with the Disney Parks Blog

One of my (Jason) favorite shows on Disney+ when it premiered on November 12, 2019 was 'The Imagineering Story,' created and directed by Leslie Iwerks. Originally planned as a documentary back in 2013, it was instead turned into a 6-part documentary for Disney+.

From the Disney Parks Blog - "In November 2019, The Imagineering Story, a six-part docuseries, premiered on Disney+. To create her ambitious documentary series, acclaimed filmmaker Leslie Iwerks, granddaughter of the award-winning Disney animator and Disney Legend Ub Iwerks and the daughter of celebrated Disney Legend Don Iwerks, was granted unprecedented access to archival documents, firsthand insights, and never-before-shared Imagineering projects. Now, Leslie collects some of the most astonishing insider stories and expands on details that did not make it into the series. Disney Publishing was afforded the privilege of discussing her experiences with the project!"

In case you haven’t heard we have a YouTube channel (Thanks James!) Episode 103 - Home on the Range is now available, check it out and subscribe over at youtube.com/@TalkingDisneyPodcast

Today in Disney History (November 23, 1963)

A day after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, Disneyland closed its gates in observance of the National Day of Mourning. The newly sworn in President, Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed that the day of Kennedy’s funeral, Monday, November 25, 1963 would be a National Day of Mourning. During this time Disneyland was already closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so I’m assuming they honored the fallen President on Saturday instead. This was the first unexpected or unplanned closure in the history of Disneyland.

Walt Quote Wednesday (November 23, 2022)

From the “Walter in Wonderland” article by Arthur Miller in the Los Angeles Times on December 4, 1938.

“When I’m no longer around, I want it to go on growing.”

Bob Iger Returns as Chief Executive Officer

It was announced tonight that Bob Chapek has stepped down as the Chief Executive Officer and former Chief Executive Officer, Bob Iger has returned to the role. “We thank Bob Chapek for his service to Disney over his long career, including navigating the company through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Susan Arnold, Disney’s board chair. Iger returns to the role he held with the Walt Disney Company from 2005-2020. His new stint is a two year deal, “with a mandate from the Board to set the strategic direction for renewed growth and to work closely with the Board in developing a successor to lead the Company at the completion of his term," said the Disney company.

We will surely be talking about this in our next episode of the Talking Disney Podcast.

Walt Quote Wednesday (November 2, 2022)

"But now, looking back, I have satisfaction, even pleasure, in tracing the effects those newspaper-delivery days had on my mature life. Now I can appreciate the self-reliance, self-discipline, and self wisdom gained from those responsibilities. The sense of responsibility - yes, this I believe is the most valuable thing a boy can carry along into later life from his first job."

In 1911, the Disney family moved to Kansas City, Missouri where Roy and Walt delivered Kansas City Star newspapers for their fathers distributorship. Roy and Walt would wake up at 3:30 a.m, seven days a week to deliver newspapers before heading to grammar school. The boys weren't paid and Walt often said he had nightmares about walking up to his neck in snow while delivering the newspapers.
