Today in Disney History (December 21, 1937)

On this date in 1937 (85 years ago), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It was Walt Disney’s first full length feature animated feature film. Much of the profits from this film were used to finance a $4.5 million studio in Burbank, California.

In 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected it as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the National Film Registry. Just recently, The Little Mermaid and Iron Man were added to that registry.

We shared our thoughts on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Episode 51 (The One That Started It All) of the Talking Disney Podcast back on November 7, 2020. Check out the episode below if you haven’t already.

YouTube: Disneyland Opening Day ABC Complete Broadcast

ABC aired the opening of Disneyland at 4:30 p.m. PST on Sunday, July 17, 1955. It was hosted by Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings and Ronald Reagan. It was estimated that 90 million viewers tuned in and it was the largest live television production ever attempted with 24 cameras and a staff of hundreds of people.

Today in Disney History (December 15, 1966)

Walt Disney passed away on this day in 1966, just ten days after his 65th birthday at St. Joseph Hospital. His remains were cremated and his ashes interred at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

"He was an original; not just an American original, but an original, period. He was a happy accident; one of the happiest this century has experienced; and judging by the way it's been behaving in spite of all Disney tried to tell it about laughter, love, children, puppies and sunrises, the century hardly deserved him. He probably did more to heal or at least to soothe troubled human spirits than all the psychiatrists in the world. There can't be many adults in the allegedly civilized parts of the globe who did not inhabit Disney's mind and imagination at least for a few hours and feel better for the visitation." -- Eric Sevareid, on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, commenting on the death of Walt Disney on December 15, 1966.

YouTube: Little Wonders (Rob Thomas) from Meet the Robinsons

Last episode of our podcast we shared our thoughts on Walt Disney's 47th animated feature film, "Meet the Robinsons." Check out this awesome song from the film!

Historic Photos: Mark Twain Riverboat on the Rivers of America

An unfinished Mark Twain Riverboat sitting in what is now known as Fowler’s Harbor (aka Fowler’s Landing) off the Rivers of America months prior to the opening of Disneyland. When the park opened it was an unnamed location that was used to service the Mark Twain. Once the Sailing Ship Columbia started to birth in the location it was named and on June 14, 1958, became Fowler’s Harbor (aka Fowler’s Landing.) Named after Joe Fowler, the Navy Admiral who supervised the construction of Disneyland and stayed with The Walt Disney Company until 1978.

Walt Quote Wednesday (December 14, 2022)

I am sorry I missed last weeks "Walt Quote Wednesday," I was traveling back home from a quick two day trip to the Disneyland Resort.

From the "Children Love Fantasy" article by Walt Disney in The Instructor, January 1955.

"Nothing is more important in the life of a child than the play of imagination during the formative years. The exercising of his explorative fancy in daydreaming is as necessary to healthy development as bread and milk, joyous physical activity, and parental affection.

A New Scene and New Critters Are Introduced for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

The Walt Disney Company has released some new information for the reimagining of Splash Mountain at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

From the Disney Parks Blog -

“We’re getting closer to going down to the bayou with Tiana and friends as progress continues on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Since the attraction was announced in 2020, Imagineers have been hard at work designing an immerse experience inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios film “The Princess and the Frog” and the heart and culture of New Orleans. We’ve shared additional details and some sneak peeks since then at events such as ESSENCE Fest and D23 Expo 2022, demonstrating how our research brought us to New Orleans in an effort to remain authentic to the story’s setting.”

Today In Disney History (December 1, 1965)

The first issue of Disney News (Winter 1965-66) is published. The “Official Magazine for Magic Kingdom Club Families” was a free perk of belonging to the Magic Kingdom Club. The first issue was 16 pages containing information on what was going on in the park, dates to visit, ticket prices, and special events for Magic Kingdom Club members. Later known as The Disney Magazine (Spring 1994 - Spring 1996) and Disney Magazine (Summer 1996 - Summer 2005.) The last issue published was in Summer 2005, it was discontinued due to an increase of people choosing to find information on the Internet causing a lack of readership.
